Doctor explains Colostomy (Stoma)
In this video Dr O'Donovan explains key things you need to know about a colostomy. A colostomy is where part of your large bowel (colon) is brought out through an opening made in your tummy. The opening is called a stoma. You will no longer poo from your bottom – it will come out of the stoma into a pouch or bag you stick on your tummy. It's usually done because part of your large bowel needs to be removed, or rested after surgery. It may be temporary and reversed later, or permanent, depending on why it's needed. A stoma might be flat against your skin or stick out a couple of centimetres. It should be soft, slippery and pink, like the inside of your mouth. The stoma should not hurt, but it can bleed easily when scratched or wiped. Types: Colostomies can be temporary or permanent, depending on the underlying cause. Temporary colostomies are often used to allow the colon to heal, and can be reversed once the healing is complete. Living with a colostomy: People with a colostomy can live a normal life with proper care, including pouch changes, skin care, and a healthy diet. Possible Reasons for a Colostomy include: Bowel cancer Inflammatory bowel disease Diverticulitis or abscess Bowel obstruction Injury to the bowel Rectal or anal cancer Bowel incontinence Recovery: It usually takes a few weeks to recover from a colostomy surgery, and it is important to rest and take the time to adjust to the changes in your body. Some foods may cause more gas or discomfort after surgery, so it's important to work with a doctor or dietitian to find a diet that works best for yo Content and timestamps: 00:00 Introduction 00:15 - What is a colostomy? 01:07 - Why might you need a colostomy? 01:58 - Preparing for a colostomy 02:37 - How is a colostomy done (operation)? 03:23 - Recovery from a colostomy 03:52 - Colostomy reversal 04:22 - Recovery 04:56 - Stoma bags and tips 05:26 - Diet and medication *Website resources* NHS UK information - https://www.nhs.uk/tests-and-treatmen...
