After the fall of Constantinople in 1453, under direct threat from the Ottoman Empire at sea and simultaneously waging a protracted, grueling war against Milan on the Italian mainland (Terraferma), Venice found itself in a deep financial and security crisis, leading to bank failures and the default of state funds. Instead of a direct military confrontation, for which the Republic was unprepared, the Venetian leadership relied on pragmatic diplomacy.
