Aerial view - Historic images - Walkaround : Lara : Victoria Australia
Lara is a residential town set in rural surrounds between Melbourne and Geelong, north-east of Geelong across Corio Bay and approximately 62km 38mi south west of the State capital Melbourne. It is thought that the name "Lara" is derived from an Aboriginal word meaning stone or building of stones. It is situated on Hovells Creek, which drains into Limeburners Bay which is an indent on the Corio Bay coastline. The Melbourne to Geelong railway (built in 1856) passes through Lara and the Princes Freeway skirts the town's southern boundary. Initially opened as Duck Ponds, the railway station was given its current name of Lara on 30 June 1875. On the other side of the freeway there is the Avalon airport.
