WRGB 11pm Newscast (March 8, 1990; Complete)
Another full NewsCenter 6 from the first year of the 90s, this one airing a mere 11 years to the day I was born, and 6 months before my parents got married. WRGB (channel 6) in Schenectady, NY carries CBS programming for the Albany, NY market, and at the time their late news was the "Night Team Report." Ernie Tetrault and Tracy Egan anchor the news, meteorologist John Cessarich has weather, and Mike Cairns has sports. John Brice and Marianne Worley report, while Jack Aernecke does a VO about the morning show. This aired exactly a year out from John Cessarich's last day with WRGB, as he left in 1991 to work at WYFF; his replacement was Neal Estano who came in from the morning show, and Steve LaPointe was hired. The rest, we say, is history! The top story is on the town of Brunswick, a rural (and suburban) town east of Troy, and residents arguing with town supervision over new land development projects. Apartment buildings "sprouting like weeds" caused anger, including a new apartment complex that was proposed, and also a rise in taxes. Meanwhile, there is good news for those looking for a home in Schenectady, as the YWCA nears a deal to acquire a new building after the old one burned. Other stories include a police officer in Pittsfield, MA under fire from the city and the PD over racism accusations, Colonie police investigate a teenage boy who fought off a man with a weapon, President Bush unveils a transportation plan while fending off a prank call from a man who pretended to be the Iranian president, a strange story on a 12-foot statue of Sylvester Stallone which has an obvious chisel mark from where his ex-wife Brigitte Nielsen would've been, a doctor reaches a settlement in court over claims she got AIDS while working at a hospital, and a positive story (and interesting one) on the Empire State Plaza auto show. Marianne Worley strolls through the plaza concourse and interviews people checking out the cars on display. The highlight is a 1990 Alfa Romeo "Graduate" - named after the movie "The Graduate" which featured an Alfa car. John Cessarich has ski reports despite spring-like temperatures starting out March. Highs are in the 50s, but temperatures at night still drop into the teens. The ski mountains are still open, and John reports the number of trails open. Ernie predicts skiing would last another few months, and John replies that Killington (Vermont) goes as late as end of June. Since July 4th is a few days away, John's remark on Killington doing a "4th of July ski" is appropriate! Onto sports, featuring Charles Barkley getting basketball lessons from a Harlem Globetrotter (and failing). The Siena women's basketball players beat Saint Peter's 56-51 (Siena's conference changed its name yesterday to the "Metro Conference"), Utah stymies Chicago's 9-game win streak, the NY Rangers accidentally score a goal for the Philadelphia Flyers (but still win anyway), and words from George Steinbrenner on the MLB lockout impacting training camp. WRGB was still using its 1986-era news theme, intros and graphics, and they held up well as the 80s came to a close. Charlie Van Dyke voices the news open. The news set was renovated in early 1993.
