Miguel Ángel Franco Fernández (Valencia, 1974) is a hero. During a European Union training mission in Mali, this Army soldier—hardened by international missions in Bosnia, Kosovo, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Somalia, and Tunisia—saved a group of European tourists from the massacre planned in June 2017 by a group of jihadists armed with machine guns at the Le Campement eco-lodge in Bamako, the capital of the African country. The same armed group had already killed five foreigners in a previous attack. For his bravery, generosity, and responsiveness, he was decorated by the European Union with the highest military recognition and declared an Adopted Son of Zaragoza, the city where he resides and currently works, leading the battalion of the General Military Academy (AGM).
