Sissel - An Raibh Tú Ag an gCarraig (Were You At Carrick [Rock])
===================================================================== 1998 - From the Album - "Long Journey Home" - Arranged by Paddy Maloney - Sung in Irish Gaelic. The Irish In America (TV series soundtrack). Sissel toured with Paddy and the Chieftains during 1997 appearing, among other places, at Carnegie Hall. Her acquaintance with them provided for Sissel's exposure to and training in their Irish music. A love song, however, in code – or so it was interpreted when it was taught in schools in Gaelic. There is SPECULATION that it recounts a time in Irish history when the celebration of the Mass was forbidden. The mass rock referred to in the song was sometimes no more than a large stone that took the place of the altar. More often than not the setting was in some remote part of the countryside. The location was not chosen for its wild beauty but rather so that approaching soldiers could be sighted far enough away for the worshipers to disappear into the countryside. =============================================================== Go to THIS Site for a Collection of Her Heavenly Sights and Sounds: http://www.tlchrist.info/aud_vid/siss... =================================================================== Lyrics ============ Were you on the rock? Or did you yourself see my love? Or did you see the brightness, the fairness Or the beauty of the woman? Or did you see the finest apple That came from the healthiest flower? Did you see my valentine? Is she being persecuted as they are saying? I was on the rock And I did see your love And I saw the brightness, the fairness And the beauty of the woman And I did see the finest apple That came from the healthiest flower And I saw your valentine She is being persecuted as they are saying ========================================= Italian translation by Cattia Salto ----------------------------------------------------- Were you in Carrick? (Were you at the Rock?) Have you yourself seen my love? Have you seen the brightest, most honest and most beautiful woman? Or have you seen the most beautiful apple that comes from the most fragrant flower Have you seen my sweetheart? Is she being mistreated as they are saying? I have been to the Rock And I have seen your love I have seen brighter, honest and beautiful woman I have seen the most beautiful apple that comes from the most fragrant flower I have seen your lover who is mistreated as they are saying =====================================================
