Demenzkranke ins Heim statt zu Hause? – Angehörige zwischen Erlösung und Schuldgefühlen | Puls | SRF
Tens of thousands of people with dementia live at home – selflessly cared for by relatives who, over time, reach their limits. Entering a nursing home awakens fears and feelings of guilt, but can also be an opportunity and a release. "Puls" shows how to successfully take this step and what makes it challenging. Presenter Daniela Lager accompanies a family member. 🔔 Subscribe to SRF Wissen now on YouTube 👉 / @srfwissen ⏰ A new episode of "Puls" every Monday at 5:30 PM on Digital First More about the video ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– 🤷♀️🤷♂️ When to move into a nursing home? – The search for the right time The case is typical: A recently retired husband cares for his wife, who suffers from dementia, for years. This becomes a 24-hour task that brings him to the end of his strength. When is entry into a nursing home inevitable? The decision is difficult for relatives, but it can be a turning point for the better. "Puls" presenter Daniela Lager accompanies 70-year-old Hans Hunziker, who placed his wife in a nursing home. His greatest fear before the first visit: Does she still recognize him? 🏡🏥 Which nursing home should it be? – The search for the right option Choosing a suitable nursing home presents significant challenges for relatives. Many criteria influence the choice, be it proximity to the old place of residence, symptoms, or the waiting list. All cantons now have special nursing home placements for people with dementia. Does it absolutely have to be a closed ward? Or would a regular nursing home also be suitable? Inspections, experiences of friends, or advice from specialist agencies are helpful in the individual search. 🏠🚚 Changing nursing homes? – When moving is worthwhile for people with dementia People with dementia cannot provide accurate information about whether they are being well treated and cared for in the nursing home. What should relatives do if they have a poor impression and are unsure? If trust is lacking for concrete reasons, moving to a new nursing home becomes an option, even for elderly people with dementia. "Puls" follows a niece as she transfers her aunt, who suffers from dementia, to a new nursing home. Is the effort worth it? 🛌🧳 Gaps in Care – Where Can "Difficult" People with Dementia Go? Not all people with dementia are welcome in every nursing home. It becomes difficult for those with forms of dementia that require above-average care, for example, those with very aggressive behavior. "Puls" follows the story of a person who developed a particularly difficult form of dementia, which led to an odyssey through nursing homes and psychogeriatric wards – stressful for his relatives. 👀 Watch directly: 00:00 Introduction 01:39 Separated by dementia after 47 years of marriage 06:08 Causes and consequences of dementia 08:12 To put in a nursing home or not? 09:55 Moved because it wasn't a good fit 14:15 Reunion after the first two weeks of separation 19:35 Difficult search for a care placement for "difficult" dementia patients 23:13 New everyday life after the wife enters a nursing home 30:26 Four tips for relatives of dementia patients ________________________ ◾ Director: Thorsten Stecher ◾ Editors: Martina Lichtsteiner, Daniel Hilfiker ◾ Presenter: Daniela Lager © 2023 SRF ________________________ This is Puls: The health magazine "Puls" reports up-to-date and in-depth on topics from the fields of medicine, psychology, nutrition, and fitness.
