He played in the Koshien tournament while attending Enokawa High School (now Iwami Chisuikan), and after graduation, he was drafted first overall by the Yokohama Taiyo Whales (now Yokohama DeNA BayStars). In 1998, he won the Best Nine, Golden Glove, and Best Battery awards, making a significant contribution to the team's championship victory. In 2002, he transferred to the Chunichi Dragons. In 2006, he was selected for the Japanese national team for the World Baseball Classic, and in 2013, he achieved 2000 hits. From the 2014 season, he became a player-manager, and in 2016, he announced his retirement. He played in a total of 3021 games (the most in NPB history), and his 27 consecutive seasons with home runs and hits are registered in the Guinness World Records.
