A Mayan Family Took Me In and Taught Me Their Dying Language Tz'utujil in Guatemala

Experience the heart of Guatemala like never before as I am welcomed into a traditional home on the shores of Lake Atitlan. In this video, a kind Mayan family shares their daily life with me and teaches me the beautiful sounds of Tz'utujil, an ancient language still spoken in the highlands. I traveled to San Pedro La Laguna to find a deeper connection with the local culture, and what I found was incredible hospitality. From learning how coffee goes from the field to the cup to sharing a meal of fresh tortillas and tamalitos, this journey was full of meaningful moments. My teacher, Anita, shared the history of her people and the original name of her town, which translates to the Place of the Hummingbird. We explore the unique way the Mayan people count, using a system based on twenty to represent the fingers and toes of a human being. You will also see the hard work that goes into farming corn and coffee in the steep mountains surrounding the lake. This experience was a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving indigenous languages and the human connections that transcend words.
