Presentation by Max Butler, MD as a part of UW ACCEPT Project ECHO, March, 2026. For more information: https://www.fammed.wisc.edu/echo/ Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a plant native to Southeastern Asia that has been used medicinally for centuries as an analgesic. In the past two decades, kratom and its psychoactive component 7-hydroxymitragynine (commonly known as 7-OH) have become more prevalent in Europe and North America and are used by consumers as self-treatment of many afflictions including pain, anxiety, fatigue, and opioid withdrawal. This presentation will explore the historical, epidemiological, and legal landscape of kratom in the United States, kratom's complex pharmacology, treatment of kratom use disorder, and management of kratom withdrawal.
