In this solo Christmas Day expedition through the George Washington National Forest, I travel alone into Virginia’s remote mountain backcountry along rugged forest roads, rocky climbs, and isolated ridgelines high above the Shenandoah Valley. Known for its mountain views, exposed ridgelines, and rugged terrain, Flagpole Knob offers one of the most scenic and recognizable off-road routes in Virginia’s Appalachian backcountry.
