Created by Robert E. Howard, Conan is often labeled a savage barbarian. But when you really look at the original Conan stories, a different picture emerges. The so-called “civilized” aristocrats, nobles, and elites—those who look down on Conan—are often the most corrupt, dishonest, and morally bankrupt characters in the world. Meanwhile, Conan operates by a personal code of honor, loyalty, and strength that many of them lack. I also connect these ideas to real life. As someone who grew up in a rural environment, I’ve experienced firsthand what it’s like to be judged as “uncivilized” by people who claim to be more refined—despite often lacking the very virtues they pretend to uphold. This video explores that contrast and why the themes in Conan still resonate today.
