David Lynch's influence on photographers Todd Hido and Gregory Crewdson
THIS VIDEO: David Lynch has obviously influenced generations of filmmakers, but his work has also had significant impact on photography. The images of Todd Hido and Gregory Crewdson are direct descendants of the Lynch visual tradition. The success of these images relies on the cinematic techniques that Lynch exploited in his films like Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive and his famous television series Twin Peaks. The world that he presents is surreal, disturbing and otherworldly. He subtly influences the way we feel by presenting scenes that resonate with our subconscious…and he builds a tension by shifting the mood between feelings of safety and unease. In 2017, Time magazine recognised a parallel between Todd Hido’s work and Lynch’s visuals. A new limited series of Twin Peaks was about to air, twenty-five years after its first season. They asked Hido to capture the mood of the series, particularly, the darker, more uneasy side of American suburban life. Gregory Crewdson had just begun graduate school at Yale in 1986 when Blue Velvet was released. He went to the cinema on the opening night, and the film changed his life. He immediately related to Lynch’s interpretation of the American landscape, its veneer of domestic order, and the exploration into its undercurrents of discontent. He understood that Blue Velvet epitomised the idea of, the uncanny. 1-on-1 MENTORING: https://graemewilliams.co.za/mentor-p... Buymeacoffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/graemewi...
