He was able to stop on the hard shoulder of the A2 highway in the eastbound direction and leave the driver's cab. The tractor unit and parts of the trailer went up in flames. The Beckum volunteer fire department deployed numerous fire engines and special vehicles to try to bring the fire under control. Among the special vehicles were two carrier vehicles, each with a 10,000 liter water tank roll-off container. These tankers, specially developed for areas with a difficult water supply, fed a fire engine one after the other with their pump capacity of up to 4,000 liters per minute, which transported the extinguishing water through a hose to the scene with a pump capacity of 2,000 liters per minute. During this time, a salvage contractor unloaded the trailer with a telescopic wheel loader. While work was still in progress, a serious accident involving several cars occurred on the westbound carriageway at around 11:55 pm. According to police reports, a 49-year-old female driver slowed down her Nissan car so much, apparently under the impression of the opposite site, that a following BMW car crashed into this obstacle. The BMW skidded into the crash barriers and then came to rest in the middle lane, unlit. The 39-year-old BMW driver was able to free himself from his car and get to safety behind the crash barriers. While the Beckum fire department, which was on the scene with a large number of firefighters in the immediate vicinity of the accident, checked that they were ready for action, the employees of the Horstmann salvage company dropped everything, ran the approx 150 meters to the scene of the accident and, together with two courageous police officers who had also jumped over the crash barriers, helped the injured female Nissan driver out of her vehicle and brought her to safety. The Beckum fire department continued to make every effort to plan their next course of action, but the scene of the accident directly on the opposite carriageway remained completely in the dark. Two minutes and 10 seconds later, another vehicle crashed into the still unlit BMW in the middle lane. The two occupants of the Renault car, aged 73 and 80, were seriously injured. Police officers and first responders from the towing company also brought the 73-year-old female driver to safety and cared for her behind the crash barrier for some time until the emergency services arrived. Her 80-year-old passenger, who was wearing a cardiac pacemaker, initially remained trapped in the vehicle and was treated by the emergency services by the light of a pocket flashlight. According to the platoon leader of the Beckum volunteer fire department, it was neither necessary nor desirable to illuminate the scene sufficiently for the safety and activities of the rescue service and emergency doctors. After the fire department from Oelde, which was actually responsible for this section of the freeway, had arrived, everyone was able to turn their attention back to the partially burning wreckage of the truck. Further extinguishing measures took place here. The burnt-out tractor unit was recovered and the trailer further unloaded. A new tractor unit was then connected to the trailer, which later had to be brought back to safety. The Beckum fire department declared the mission to be completed and handed over further work to the salvage company.
