EMBOLISE: middle meningeal artery embolization to prevent the recurrence of subdural hematoma

Jason Davies, MD, PhD, State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo, Buffalo, NY, discusses the results of the EMBOLISE trial (NCT04402632), examining the use of middle meningeal artery embolization for treatment of symptomatic subacute or chronic subdural hematoma (SDH). The EMBOLISE trial assessed the use of Onyx™ Liquid Embolic System embolization as an adjunct to surgical treatment, compared to surgical treatment alone. There was a significant benefit of embolization, showing a 3-fold reduction in the rate of return to the operating room, compared to those who did not receive embolization. This finding is supported by comparable results in the MAGIC-MT (NCT04700345) and STEM (NCT04410146) trials. Taken together, these findings are likely to fuel a paradigm shift in the treatment of subdural hematoma.
