H. Mulet: Esquisses Byzantines ... the sound of Sacre-Coeur de Paris ... (1)

Henry Mulet (1878 - 1967): Esquisses Byzantines (complete, Part 1) - En mémoire de la Basilique du Sacré-Coeur de Montmartre 1914 - 1919 I. Nef II. Vitrail III. Rosace IV. Campanile - "Tout blanc, il domine au loin l'immensité des campagnes" The final Toccata "Tu es petra" of Mulet's Esquisses Byzantines became very famous, but the other nine peces are played very sheldom. I was enthusiastic about Mulet's music; so I decided to record the whole serie. The first part of the Esquisses Byzantines describes details of the Sacre-Coeur building. It starts with a majestic musical painting about the nave, followed by two pieces about the windows: a Canon (Vitrail) and a meditation about the rose window. Chapelle des Morts is a Marche funèbre. The mouvement over the Campanile is a genious piece: It describes the monumentality of the church tower and its bells in a very soft way: one will regognize the bells even the music tells only something about bells which remain silent.
