Ο Καποδίστριας ως Στρατηγός και ο Πρώτος Όρκος των Οπλαρχηγών (1807 – Λευκάδα)
The defense of Lefkada in 1807 is one of the most underestimated yet decisive episodes of the pre-revolutionary period. (Subtitles available in Greek, English & German.) At a time when the Greek state did not yet exist, Lefkada became the place where figures who would later play leading roles in the Greek War of Independence of 1821 met and cooperated for the first time. At the center of these events stands Ioannis Kapodistrias — not as a diplomat, but as an organizer, a strategic mind, and a commanding leader. On this small island, Kapodistrias did not merely organize a defense against the forces of Ali Pasha. He organized people, structures, alliances, and military forces in ways that far exceeded the realities of his time. Klephts, armatoloi, Souliotes, Ionian Islanders, Russian officers, and local populations worked together in an unprecedented collective effort, proving that unity and organization could transform diverse and fragmented forces into an effective fighting body. The defense of Lefkada was not simply a successful military operation. It was a rehearsal of national consciousness — a moment when the idea of Revolution began to take concrete shape, many years before 1821. At the end of this common effort, following the failure of Ali Pasha’s campaign, the protagonists of these events gathered at Magemeno in Lefkada. There, in an atmosphere of celebration but also deep awareness of the historical weight of the moment, an oath of unity and common purpose was sworn. This was not an official political act nor a formal declaration. Yet it was an oath of memory and resolve — an informal but deeply symbolic moment in which people from different regions and traditions recognized, for the first time, that their struggle could be shared. This oath was not recorded in documents or treaties. It was recorded in the memory of those who took part — and many of them, fourteen years later, would once again stand on the front lines of the Greek Revolution of 1821. This video seeks to shed light on: • why the defense of Lefkada has been historically underestimated • how the cooperation of key figures laid the foundations of the Greek Revolution • and how Kapodistrias’ organizational and military abilities were revealed long before he assumed the governance of the Greek state Lefkada in 1807 was not the beginning of the Revolution. But it was the moment when many realized that this beginning had become inevitable. 📚 Sources History of the Island of Lefkada / P. G.
