The modern game is being played higher and higher. More spin. More net clearance. More balls jumping up above shoulder height. In this lesson, we worked on learning how to take the backhand earlier and closer to the peak of the bounce instead of letting the ball climb and push him back. Once players wait too long on the one-hander, they often lose posture, spacing, and freedom through contact. We focused on: • Hunting the peak of the bounce to stay aggressive and take time away • Becoming comfortable making contact in higher strike zones • Using footwork and spacing to create freedom on the one-hander • Understanding how modern players neutralize heavy topspin without backing up constantly The one-handed backhand can absolutely thrive in the modern game — but it requires intent, positioning, and learning to live in higher contact points. That’s where the game is headed.
