On Friday (June 12, 2026), students in Jakarta held a long march from various locations to the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout. The students had five main demands, including: Stop the waste of the State Budget (APBN). Reduce the prices of basic necessities and fuel. Stop the Free Nutritious Meal program and the development of the Red and White Village Cooperative. Stop militarism in the civilian sphere. Urge President Prabowo Subianto to acknowledge the government's mistakes and stop denying them. The price increase for Pertamax from Rp12,300 to Rp16,250 on June 10 shocked the public. Long lines formed at almost all gas stations. Residents flocked to use subsidized fuel, Pertalite. The large number of people switching to Pertalite caused several gas stations in Jakarta to run out of fuel. PT Pertamina President Director Simon Aloysius Mantiri emphasized that the adjustment of non-subsidized fuel prices was made taking into account global geopolitical dynamics and prevailing oil prices on the international market, while still taking into account public purchasing power. The Chairman of Commission XI of the House of Representatives, Muhamad Misbakhun, assessed that the Pertamax price increase would put pressure on inflation. Furthermore, Pertamax users are predominantly the general public and not the industrial sector, so the impact on the prices of goods and services remains to be studied in more depth. Finance Minister Purbaya stated that Pertamax is not used for freight transportation, so it will have only a small impact on inflation. To maintain public purchasing power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia stated that the government is reviewing several assistance schemes before re-coordinating with Pertamina. Meanwhile, the subsidy formula is deliberately focused on the economically disadvantaged. If the middle class continues to face economic pressure, they will certainly reduce consumption.
