"The Skilled Detective" (1945) is a short story by the famous American short story writer William Sydney Porter (1862-1910), under the pseudonym O. Henry. We meet Thomas Keeling, a principled, calm, and studious man who was a detective and had just opened his office. On his third day of business, he receives a woman who claims to be cheating on her husband, who owns a small jewelry store. She pays the fees in advance, and he assures his client that he will follow the husband to find out. Charlie Randall, the husband, appears to the detective to be a man of good morals and calm manners. The store, although small, was well-stocked with jewelry, watches, and diamonds. With the suspicion of infidelity confirmed, the woman and the detective devise a plan, which even involves the policeman on the street. Something that involves feeling, staging, and, of course, the unexpected. It's worth mentioning that Detective Keeling was a reader of Arthur Conan Doyle, with Sherlock Holmes serving as an inspiration for his profession. This is a very well-crafted story that will leave you laughing. Because of this, O. Henry achieved great popularity in his time, and for many, he is one of the greatest names in universal short stories.
