A tour of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Hut in Antarctica.
Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Hut at Cape Royds, Ross Island, Antarctica is one of the continent’s most historic places. An Antarctic Specially Protected Area (ASPA) it has the highest level of protection under the Antarctic Treaty System. 15 men spent the winter inside this very historic hut and became the first people to do a lot of things in Antarctica including climb Mount Erebus. It was from this building that Shackleton departed for the South Pole, and although he didn’t make it all the way there, set a record for the furthest south of any human at that time. He famously turned his group around just ~100 miles from the pole, saving their lives. Sir Ernest Shackleton launched other expeditions after this one, with his most famous being the Endurance expedition where his ship sank after it was crushed by sea ice in the Weddell Sea. The men famously lived on the sea ice for months and eventually made their way to Elephant Island. From there Shackleton and 5 other men rowed from Elephant Island to South Georgia to save the marooned men he’d left in Antarctica. This Hut was built in 1907 and has been expertly conserved by the team at @AntarcticHeritage Trust in New Zealand. They’ve done an amazing job.
