A look at the history of skills in Dungeons & Dragons and other early roleplaying games. D&D originally did not have skills and it wasn't until the mid-1980's that they started to become common in D&D. Other games began using skill system and many, unlike D&D, were not class-and-level systems, but instead skill-based systems. We cover skills, or the lack thereof, in every edition of D&D from the beginning up through 5th Edition, and talk about other games like Empire of the Petal Throne, Traveller, Runequest, and Call of Cthulhu.
