Water management in the Netherlands: 225 years Rijkswaterstaat
The Netherlands has been living with water intensively since its earliest history. For us, it's a source of great wealth and opportunity that simultaneously poses risks and carries a continuous reason to act. This conflicting mission dealing with both the promise and the threat of the water, laid the ground for the creation of Rijkswaterstaat 225 years ago. Let us trace the journey we've made in collaboration with our partners around the world and the collective journey we see ahead of us. Rijkswaterstaat is charged with water management in the Netherlands. Among other tasks, we are responsible for ensuring a sufficient supply of water and keeping the country protected against flooding. We take care of water management in the major waters (such as the sea and rivers), we maintain water works (e.g., dykes, dams, weirs, and storm surge barriers), we protect the coast, and we give more room to rivers (e.g., by deepening floodplains and constructing secondary channels). We don't do that on our own: in fact, we can't do that on our own. Collaboration is essential. At local level, regional level, national level and international level.
