Paul Beaudoin - the complex responsibility of a simple line (2022) for piano and electronics Hyun-Mook Lim, pf // “the complex responsibility of a simple line” is part of my Soundfield series, a group of works exploring the alignment between my visual and sound worlds. Each Soundfield begins with a fixed electronic background, something like a painter’s canvas. The performer then acts within that field, placing fixed pitch materials, the colors of the piece, into musical space with a high degree of freedom. Here, a line may be a drawn mark, a melodic path, a boundary, or an instruction that sets a field in motion. Its responsibility lies in how little it contains, and how much it can alter.
