To celebrate the 90th anniversary of Politique étrangère (https://www.ifri.org/fr/publications-..., Marc Hecker, Executive Director of Ifri, interviews two of the journal's leading figures: Thierry de Montbrial, founder and president of Ifri, and Dominique David, co-editor-in-chief of the journal. Founded in 1936, Politique étrangère is the oldest French journal dedicated to international relations. For nine decades, it has accompanied and illuminated the major world debates, from decolonization to the Cold War, from European integration to contemporary geopolitical upheavals. In a media landscape saturated with information, it plays a more crucial role than ever as an analytical compass, helping its readers identify what is essential amidst the global flow. To mark this anniversary, a special issue has just been published (https://www.ifri.org/fr/sommaires-pre.... It focuses on the major challenges facing our societies: demography, energy, climate, and global governance; but also, in a more unexpected section, features texts by writers from around the world invited to share their vision of the future. On the geopolitical front, Thierry de Montbrial develops an in-depth reflection on the future of the European Union. For him, the federalist model inherited from Jean Monnet has reached its limits. He advocates for a European restructuring around a confederation of sovereign states: a more realistic architecture, capable of guaranteeing strategic autonomy vis-à-vis the United States, managing enlargement without diluting cohesion, and integrating the sensitivities of Eastern Europe. This vision invites Europe to finally build its own security architecture, one that meets the realities of the 21st century.
