SUBJECT VERB AGREEMENT #4: Compound Subjects | Making subjects and Verbs Agree
SUBJECT VERB AGREEMENT #4: Compound Subjects | Making subjects and Verbs Agree Subjects and verbs must AGREE with one another in number (singular or plural). So, if the subject is singular, its verb must be singular; if a subject is plural, its verb must also be plural. Note that in present tenses, nouns and verbs form plurals in opposite ways: while nouns add an s to the singular form, verbs remove an s from the singular form. Singular subject and singular verb Plural subject and plural verb The boy loves to play cricket. The boys love to play cricket. (-s) (+s) (+s) (-s) COMPOUND SUBJECTS When a subject has two or more parts joined by and, it is usually treated as plural and given a plural verb form. EXAMPLE: Cricket and baseball are my favorite sports. However, subjects joined by and may name only one person, place, thing, or idea. If the compound subject refers to a single person or thing, then it should take a singular verb. EXAMPLE: Bulla and pear is one of my favorite foods at cricket camp. When each or every is used with a subject that has two or more parts joined by and, the verb is singular. EXAMPLE: Every boy and girl loves cricket camp. Each cricket bat and ball looks new. When two or more subjects are joined by or or nor, either...or, or neither.....nor, the verb agrees with the simple subject that is closest to it. EXAMPLE: Coach Francis or Coach Walsh is inside the building. “Neither football nor basketball is as fun as cricket,” said Coach Walsh. Either Coach Francis or the players are preparing dinner. Subject verb agreement is an exciting topic. So basically, if a subject is singular, the verb must be singular. If a subject is plural, the verb must be plural.
