Alcohol in Amman: Jordanian capital city's bars remain popular despite Muslim restrictions

Liquor stores are strewn throughout the city of Amman. By law, bars and liquor stores must be owned and run by Christians. No Muslims allowed. However, Muslims are perfectly free to patronize them -- and they do. The exception is that women in hijab are generally turned away. During Ramadan, all bars and liquor stores remain closed, even after sunset, unless they have a specific tourist license. For the most part, these are the more high-end places like hotel lounge bars and some of the West Amman clubs.
