At this point, Daniel is around 80 years old and has been a captive for most of his life. He discovers that the 70 years of the Babylonian captivity is almost over. Knowing the importance of prayer and fasting, Daniel earnestly seeks the Lord, confessing his sins and the sins of his people. During Daniel’s prayer, the angel Gabriel visits him to give insight and understanding concerning the previous vision that Daniel did not understand. The explanation reveals the 70-week time prophecy that begins with a decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem. It is a message filled with hope and encouragement for Daniel and his people. Even so, it ends in the future destruction of both his city and the sanctuary.
