It relies on spring tension to deploy the blade out the side of the handle. Accomplished by depressing a recessed button towards the top of the handle. It also features a safety to keep both from accidentally depressing the button as well as to lock the blade in the open position during use. While I'm not sure it would be my first choice as a defensive blade, it does an amazing job at most everyday tasks. The S90V blade is incredibly sharp.
