The wealthy huddled in great halls and castles that were difficult to heat properly, with tapestries hung on stone walls providing minimal insulation against the bitter cold. Smoke from central hearths would often fail to properly ventilate through roof holes, leaving inhabitants to choose between warmth and breathing clean air. The peasantry faced even harsher conditions, sharing their modest homes with livestock to benefit from animal body heat while contending with drafty walls and leaky roofs. Food scarcity was a constant worry, as communities relied on carefully preserved autumn harvests and stored meat. Fresh produce was virtually nonexistent, leading to widespread vitamin deficiencies and health problems. Illness spread rapidly in the close quarters people maintained for warmth, while the lack of modern medicine made even minor winter ailments potentially fatal. Travel became treacherous or impossible on muddy, frozen, or snow-covered roads, isolating communities and hampering trade. The shorter days meant less productive time for necessary work, yet there was often more labor required for basic survival - gathering firewood, caring for animals, maintaining shelter against storms. The elderly and very young were especially vulnerable, with high mortality rates during harsh winters. The season's challenges fostered a strong sense of community interdependence, as survival often depended on neighbors helping neighbors with shared resources and labor.
