In today's video, we continue our journey through shoemaking history at John Lobb. Located on 9 St James's Street, just steps away from St James's Palace, John Lobb – the original John Lobb – has been discretely going about its craft of making the best bespoke shoes in the world for over 150 years. Now that the uppers have been sewn together - or closed as they say in the trade - John Lobb then prepares the "rough stuff" or the various components that the bespoke maker then uses to make the finished pair of shoes. John Lobb’s narrative over the years has refined the selection of leathers, each chosen for its unique properties to enhance the shoe's aesthetics, durability, and comfort. The bespoke shoes crafted for our exploration incorporate no less than five distinct types of leather, each serving a specific purpose - from toe puffs and stiffness to insoles, outsoles, welt leather, side fillers, leather lifts, and top lifts. Every piece, selected with intent, is shaped entirely by hand, embodying the pinnacle of bespoke shoemaking.
