I often get asked where you can study Data Science in South Africa straight after matric. So I went through every institution that offers a dedicated undergraduate Data Science degree - the entry requirements, the modules, and who each one is actually best for. One thing to know up front: these are all maths-based programmes. Your matric results matter, and Mathematics especially. Some of these have strict entry bars, others are far more accessible - but a strong maths foundation is non-negotiable across all of them. The good news is that data science opens doors in almost any industry - banking, marketing, health, retail. The opportunities are real, and so is the earning potential. The 6 institutions covered: 1. Stellenbosch University — Bachelor of Data Science (4 years) Includes an Honours-equivalent fourth year. Probability theory, calculus, linear algebra, computer science, data structures, algorithms, machine learning, databases, and a final research assignment. Entry is strict: 80% average and 80% Maths. Best for top achievers. 2. University of Cape Town — BBusSc Statistics & Data Science (4 years) Data science with a business spine — accounting, economics, microeconomics alongside statistics and computer science. Highly competitive. Best if you want to understand business as well as the technical side. 3. University of Pretoria — BCom Statistics & Data Science (3 years) Statistics and maths intensive, with commerce foundations. The standout: a built-in SAS certification, which is widely used in banking and financial modelling. APS 32, Maths level 5. Applications close in June. 4. UKZN — BSc Statistics & Computer Science (3 years) Programming, statistics, data analysis, calculus — and it's the only one on the list with an AI module. APS 30, the lowest bar here. Applications close in September, so there's still time. 5. Sol Plaatje University — BSc in Data Science (3 years) One of the first universities in SA to offer data science at undergraduate level. Strong balance of computer science and data science — computer architecture, operating systems, networks, discrete maths, machine learning, multivariate statistics, data visualisation. APS around 30. 6. Eduvos — BSc IT: Data Science (3 years, or 5 part-time online)** Private institution, 12 campuses plus fully online. Data ethics, cloud, networking, programming, Linux, AI techniques. Needs 50% Grade 12 Maths. The lightest and most flexible option — good if you're aiming at data analysis or need to study part-time. Note: being private, NSFAS funding may not apply. My top two picks: University of Pretoria and University of Cape Town — both for their strong business focus.
