The Two Endgame Plans: How Capablanca Wins With Just One Idea Capablanca best chess endings 20

Capablanca gives up his queen — but not for mate. Not even for a knockout. He gives it away, almost casually, for the quietest reason in chess: to let a pawn become a queen. Welcome to Game 20 of our deep analysis of Capablanca's Best Chess Endings by Irving Chernev. Today's game is Capablanca versus Benito Villegas, Buenos Aires, 1914 — and it is one of the purest demonstrations of endgame planning ever played at the master level. Irving Chernev frames it perfectly: "In the good old days, masters such as Morphy and Anderssen gave away Queens, Rooks, Knights, and Bishops with a lavish hand. Take as example this beautiful specimen by Capablanca. There is a Queen sacrifice in the midgame, but it is not made in order to finish the game in a blaze of glory. The Queen is offered almost nonchalantly — so far as Capablanca is concerned, it is a routine move — in order to gain a positional advantage. And it does gain a positional advantage, whether the Queen is captured or not." A romantic move, used for the most unromantic reason in chess. That is the whole story of this game. 📥 GET THE FREE PDF STUDY NOTES FOR THIS GAME: The complete written breakdown — the two-plan framework, the move-by-move analysis, the manual citations, the Marshall 1909 sister-game comparison — delivered straight to your inbox. Plan One: attack the opponent's weak pawns. Plan Two: use your passed pawns. Every single endgame you will ever play comes down to those two ideas. Today is Plan Two in laboratory-pure form — Capablanca has no passed pawn when the endgame begins, so he builds one. ♟️ FOUR KEY LESSONS, anchored to four moves you can study and remember: 1. DELIVER THE PASSER — a pawn majority is a passed pawn waiting to be born. 22.b4! starts the conversion pipeline: three-against-two becomes two-against-one, then one-against-nothing. Whenever you hold a majority, see the passer hidden inside it. 2. ROOK BEHIND, KING AIR — major-piece endings have their own rules. 25.Rc1 posts the rook behind the passer before it is even passed; 24.g3 creates luft so a back-rank check can never become mate. 3. TRADE UP YOUR EDGE — 26.Qe3! is the deepest move of the game. Capablanca voluntarily surrenders the open d-file, the very advantage he worked to build, in order to control c5 and seal the seventh rank. Spend a smaller advantage to buy the decisive one — the mark of a great master. 4. REFUSE THE DISTRACTION — Capablanca declines a free pawn (29.Qxh7 was available) and ultimately gives up his queen (33.Qxd6!) — both for the same reason: neither served the plan, and the passed pawn did. Pick the right plan, then turn down everything that isn't it. ♟️ THE SISTER-GAME CALLBACK — Capablanca played the identical plan against Frank Marshall in their 1909 match, five years earlier, with Black instead of White. Same queenside majority, same conversion, same rook behind the passer. This is not improvisation. It is a method. ♟️ MAJOR-PIECE TECHNIQUE — queen-and-rook endings demand specific habits that win or lose games at every rating level. We cover both, with verbatim citations from Nunn's Chess Endings Volume 1 (chapter 7 on queen endings) and Volume 2 (rook endings). This is not a tactical fireworks game. It is a structural lesson — one idea, executed without deviation, for thirty-four moves. If your endgames are plateauing, this is exactly the kind of disciplined planning that breaks the plateau. ♟️ Tired of reading endgame books and still misplaying the same kinds of endgames over the board? That gap between knowing and doing is exactly what my $100 Strategy Session is built to close. We audit your last twenty games, we find the leak, and we build you a structured roadmap to the rating you actually want.
