Dehong Food Episode 1 starts in the rice fields of Dehong, Yunnan China. Fish are caught right out of the paddy, and the meal is wrapped on the edge of the field in banana leaves. In some Dai villages, rice, fish, and lunch still come from the same patch of land. This episode follows villagers into the water to catch fish by hand, then stays with the cooking as rice field fish, sticky rice, and local herbs are packed into banana leaves and cooked by the fire. It is a simple meal, but it shows very clearly how farming and eating still belong together here.
