Long mountain hikes seem to be the recipe for achieving the perfect level of fitness. When you strap on a backpack and head into the mountains for a few months, or at least weeks, you emerge physically fit as half-human, half-machine for special tasks. But what exactly happens in your body when you embark on a long-distance trail and walk 30, 40, or 50km daily? It's common to hear hikers say that after a few months on the trail, they feel their body begins to function like a machine – and I've experienced this myself more than once. Observing the physical changes in your body and the dramatic increase in its capabilities with each passing mile is fascinating. Of course, much more happens in your body than simply being able to effortlessly hike 50km through the mountains day after day. Some people's feet grow, almost everyone loses weight. But that's just the beginning of the changes. How exactly does your body improve? What begins to function better, and what begins to perform perfectly? What are the most positive effects of the trail on our bodies?
