Qu'ai-je fait au Bon Dieu ?

"What have I done to God?" This is the question Christian Clavier and Chantal Lauby ask themselves in Philippe de Chauveron's famous French comedy. They wonder what they could have done wrong that "God is so relentless against them." It is sometimes with this exclamation that we greet an event considered unjust. But where in Church teaching does it say that God punishes people who have acted wrongly? Through their sin, people cut themselves off from God. God's ever-offering forgiveness allows them to rediscover His covenant. Sin also causes them harm. Thus, some events considered unjust are simply consequences of their own actions or choices. God infinitely loves every human being, regardless of their behavior. He does not directly punish people, but rather offers them opportunities to repent and draw closer to Him. It is up to each of us to seize them! Father Charles Lenoir is a priest of the Diocese of Séez, serving at the Notre-Dame de Montligeon shrine. He answers Guillaume Desanges' questions for the program "Les sacrés normands" on RCF Orne-Calvados-Manche, broadcast Tuesdays at 7:15 p.m. https://rcf.fr/spiritualite/les-sanct...
