Nina Koshetz - the great Russian Soprano: 1928 Victor: Yaroslavna's Arioso / Lullaby from Sadko

Nina Koshetz - Perhaps the greatest Ukrainian Russian Opera Singer in two great arias from Russian Operas: Alexander Borodin: Prince Igor ======================== Yaroslavna's Arioso Act I Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakoff: Sadko ========================== Volkhova's Lullaby For biographical information and more recordings, check this great website. http://www.cantabile-subito.de/Sopran... Since I believe that the lyrics are essential to appreciate the composer's skill and the performer's genius, I have added them below. Translation is mine (Oy Vey!) [ ] are cuts. The paintings shown in the video are by the greatest painters and stage designers of pre-revolutionary Russia. Yaroslavna's Arioso ================ Yaroslavna, a protagonist of the first Russian epic - The Lay of Igor's Host - has become the symbol of the mother with her men lost at war. [It has been long time ago that my dear Igor, with his son Vladimir and his brother Vsevolod went to war against the Polovtsy with his warriors. I don't know what this bodes to me; it seems a long time that no messenger came from the Prince to me. Oh, if I heard someone from down there bring me news of Igor.] Ah, my heart tells me unwelcome news; it aches, it hurts and burns with fire; a dark mood tortures me, that nothing good will come. Ah, where are you, where are you, sweet olden days, when my beloved was with me, gone is the time of happy days! Alone in sorrow from morn all day, alone in tears I sleep at night, and with great fear I await my friend, and eagerly anticipate his news. He does not come, no news arrives, and I wait always, always. And evil dreams torture me at night. A vision often comes that my beloved, as if he were with me again, beckons with his hands, calls me to him, while he himself walks away, and disappears, and I am alone again. Fear and despair grip me ... [I wake up again, with streams of tears, and cannot get rid of them. There was a time, where I did not know pain, when my beloved was always at my side; this time of happy days is gone, with terror in my heart, fear in my soul, I weep day and night. One, only one thought I have, one, one fear on my mind: He will not come, no news arrive, and a long long time will go by ...] Will he then soon, my darling, come back to me, can I urgently expect him back? Where is he, where, my prince, my beloved? Volkhova's Lullaby =============== A tale of the Little Mermaid, Volkhova, daughter of the Ocean King, dies, out of love to Sadko, at the rising of the sun. Sleep walked along the riverbank, and Dream on the meadow. Sleep sought out Dream, and Dream asked him: Where sleeps Sadko, the brave singer? Sleep, sleep well my child. My Sadko lies on the riverbank, on the green meadow, in his safe bower, surrounded by green reeds. I cradle him to sleep, tenderly and lovingly. Sleep well, sleep well my child. You grow, my reed-stalks, safe and pleasant bower, do not sway, you green silken grass. My brave heart was filled by his song. [Dawn came up on the skies, may you be full of glory and fortune, Sadko. And I, the Princess Volkhova, your brave companion, will become a light vapor and turn into a swift brook, I will run though green meadows, through yellow sands will I drift, next to my true friend along the stony cliffs, I will be his true friend to the end of time. My brave heart was filled by his wond'rous songs. Sleep well, sleep well my child.] The Capehart De Luxe Turn-Over Record Changer was the epitome of luxury radio-phonographs.
