PINXTON: Bolsover Parish #13 of 16
The Southernmost of Bolsover’s sixteen parishes for you today, bounded to the North by fellow Bolsover parish South Normanton, to the West by Somercotes in Amber Valley, to the South by Selston in Ashfield district, and to the East by an unparished area of Ashfield. Most of the village’s property was constructed on the back of coal mining activity – yes this is another area of Bolsover which had mines – and even though there are plenty of areas here that could be termed new builds, mostly it has that same mining town aura that we’ve become accustomed to elsewhere. John King who lived here, invented the mine cage safety detaching hook which became world famous and his old workshop was converted into a small commemorative museum. In a single room it displays through photographs, documents, artefacts and models a revealing insight into the economic and social history of the village The sinking of Brookhill Colliery was about 200 yards west of the modern day Beaufit Lane, and it began in February 1908. A modern industrial estate now sits on the site now. The Northern terminus of a branch of the Cromford Canal, can be found here too which opened up local coalfields and a porcelain trade to a wide market via the Erewash Canal. I’ve decided to trial a new way of presenting this one. Hopefully you’ll like it! This is PINXTON. **** My name is Andy. I am armed with a car, a GoPro and an unhealthy amount of time on my hands.
