Dasmat Kaina by Rekha Devar, Chhattisgarh

This video is based on the recitation of the Dasmat Kaina tale by the Chhattisgarhi artist Rekha Devar, who began performing the tale at the age of eight, and has been performing it ever since, receiving various accolades and recognition. An interview with the artist draws out the significance of this tale in the region and her own experience of performing it. It also charts shifts in its performance in her living memory, recording her own agency in introducing change. The Folklore of Dasmat Kaina is about a young princess Dasmat who despite her glorious fortune was married to a poor Odiya labour. Dasmat was the youngest among the seven daughters of Raja Bhoj of Bhojpur.
