From legendary clashes to the most exciting moments of these tournaments, you'll discover how some of the world's best karateka left their mark on the history of Kyokushin Karate. With a focus on the first five championships, we begin with the First World Open Championship, held in November 1975, with 128 competitors from 32 countries. Here, names like Katsuaki Sato, Hatsuo Royama, and Joko Nimoniya, among others, became Kyokushin legends. Next, we move on to the 2nd World Open Championship, held in November 1979, where Makoto Nakamura once again dominated the competition, followed by renowned karatekas such as Keiji Sanpei and Willie Williams, consolidating Kyokushin as an international martial art with competitors from 62 countries. We also review the 3rd World Open Championship, held in January 1984, where Makoto Nakamura reigned supreme, alongside big names such as Keiji Sanpei and Akiyoshi Matsui, highlighting the participation of Ademir Da Costa from Brazil, who made his mark as one of the best South American exponents of this martial art. At the 4th World Open Championship, held in November 1987, we explore the outstanding performance of Akiyoshi Matsui, who became champion, and the emergence of Andy Hug, the legendary Swiss karateka who made history as one of the first Europeans to reach the top positions in a Kyokushin world championship. Finally, we arrive at the 5th World Open Championship in November 1991, with Kenji Midori at the top, followed by great fighters such as Akira Masuda and Hiroki Kurosawa, in one of the most crowded championships, with 250 competitors from 105 countries.
