Slavic writing was created in the 9th century, presumably by the Byzantine missionary, the Slavic enlightener Cyril, to translate liturgical texts from Greek into Old Church Slavonic. Some of the previous missionaries had already tried to translate the liturgy into Slavic and use the Greek or Latin alphabet for this, but these attempts were unsuccessful, since the Slavic language had many sounds for which there were no letters in Greek and Latin. In view of this difficulty, Cyril began to create a Slavic alphabet, using existing developments. It is not without reason that the alphabetical order of the letters and their names in the Glagolitic alphabet will later turn out to be almost identical to those in Cyrillic. Since the middle of the 9th century, the Glagolitic alphabet was used in Moravia, where the brothers Cyril and Methodius preached. Then it penetrated into Bulgaria, Rus' and Croatia. The word "Glagolitic" goes back to the Proto-Slavic *golgol. In Bulgarian dialects there are variants - glagul - meaning "gift of speech", "voice", and in Czechs hlahol - "sound", "singing". A distinctive feature of the Glagolitic alphabet is the rare use of linear elements and a wider use of rounded shapes. Unlike Cyrillic, the letters of the Glagolitic alphabet are more ornate and have predominantly closed outlines. The uniqueness of the Glagolitic script does not allow researchers to confidently connect it with any of the alphabets that existed at that time. It seemed to me that Glagolitic lost to Cyrillic, precisely because of its peculiar artificial writing and illegibility. However, having tried to write these letters myself, I realized that they, if necessary, can easily be transformed into cursive writing. And remembering the monumentality of the original Cyrillic charter in comparison with the Glagolitic symbols, I abandoned this idea altogether. I now believe that preferences for a certain writing system cannot always be explained from the point of view of everyday practicality. There were two main types of Glagolitic - rounded, common in Bulgaria and a later angular, somewhat similar to cuneiform, used in Croatia. Glagolitic became the progenitor of Cyrillic, which was formed as a result of the processing of Greek writing and elements of the Glagolitic alphabet. In Cyrillic spellings, Glagolitic looping sometimes appears, and some Glagolitic signs entered the Cyrillic alphabet to denote specific sounds, such as Ж, Ч, Ъ, Э, etc. The use of Glagolitic in Bulgaria, Macedonia and Rus' ceased by the 12th century, and from that time on, the Croatian Glagolitic acquired its characteristic angular features. By the way, the square Glagolitic is still used in the ritual of some church parishes in Adriatic Croatia and western Macedonia, so I would not call this alphabet dead. Since I do not have a goose feather at hand right now, which would be appropriate for conducting this experiment, I took for work an American speedball number 4 feather, which, due to its twice-cut tip, very reliably and softly imitates a natural bird feather. But, if available, I would prefer a goose quill, which communicates with the surface of the paper in a completely special way and gives an inimitable impression of writing. Under the Glagolitic letters I indicate an approximate transcription, so to speak, from Russian to Russian, with the help of which you can try to compose modern words with Glagolitic letters or play secret writing with your young friends and intelligence officers. #penmanship #calligraphy #alphabetman
