What else can a stretchy wrap do? Hip Wrap Cross Carry with a twist in a Joey Wrap
Stretchy wraps can do so much right!? Hip Wrap Cross Carry is another good one for those babies that have moved past the newborn stage. In keeping with our series of making things "different," though, there's a slight twist in this version of HWCC. This is usually a beginner-level carry, but the twist levels us up to intermediate territory. To tie, the wrap starts with the middle marker on the center of the wearer's chest. Bring both ends of the wrap under arms, then cross them in back and bring them over the opposite shoulder, making an "X" on the wearer's back. At front, bring both tails into the pocket created by the wrap. If you'd like to twist the wrap to keep the inside edge away from the wearer's neck, then select the tail that is opposite the hip baby will be worn on. Find the outside edge of the tail and bring it under and in to make the flip. Take both tails, cross at the wearer's hip, and tie in back. Bring baby up to burping position, Then slide baby's nearest leg into the pass closest to the wearer's body, then the outside cross pass. Place baby on the wearer's body where you'd like them to be, in this case on the hip and high enough to be easily kissable; adjust baby's legs into a spread squat position (newborns may keep their legs in for this carry, just be sure the wrap supports baby's weight at their bum, not feet - always follow baby's positioning cues). Bring the inside pass up baby's back to their neck, and remember if you did the twist you'll need to bring the outside edge at your shoulder under that inside edge and then up baby's back (so the "wrong" side of the wrap will be facing out). Then spread the second cross pass up baby's back - make sure both passes are supporting baby from shoulders to bum and knee to knee, supporting baby's spread-squat position. The third pass that makes the pocket needs to come over both of baby's legs, then spread it from bum to neck, again smooth over baby's back with the extra bunching held under bum. Spread the shoulders on the wearer for comfort. For the full list of stretchy wrap tutorials, visit amywrapsbabies.com/stretchy-wraps.
