Tecnologías Aplicadas en la Palma de Aceite - TvAgro por Juan Gonzalo Angel
Twitter @juangangel Small farmers are the most important link for the countryside and the economy, but when new technologies are introduced in agriculture, most small producers are reluctant to implement them. The support and training provided by various organizations always seek to support, mentor, and teach new technologies, thus improving the quality of products, helping them combat pests and diseases, and enriching farmers' knowledge and lifestyle. Palm oil cultivation has been criticized for its environmental impact,67 which includes deforestation, loss of natural habitats8 of endangered species such as the orangutan910 and the Sumatran tiger,11 as well as its contribution to greenhouse gas emissions.712 Many palm plantations are located on peatlands, and clearing land for cultivation contributes to increased greenhouse gas emissions.1213 Significant efforts have been made to make palm oil cultivation sustainable by several organizations, such as the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil,14 an industry group, and the Malaysian government, which has committed to maintaining 50% of its land area as forest.15 According to research by the Tropical Peat Research Laboratory, a group dedicated to studying palm cultivation,16 palm plantations act as carbon sinks, converting carbon dioxide into oxygen,17 and, according to the "Second Malaysia's "National Communiqué" to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the plantations contribute to Malaysia's status as a net carbon sink.18 Environmental groups, such as Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth, oppose the use of palm oil as biofuel, arguing that the deforestation caused by palm plantations is more damaging to the climate than the benefits obtained by replacing inorganic fuels with biofuel.13 19 20 Although only 5% of the land dedicated to vegetable oil production is used for palm cultivation, it produces 38% of the total vegetable oil supply.21 In terms of yield, a palm plantation is 10 times more productive than a soybean or rapeseed plantation, because both the fruit and the seed of the palm fruit produce oil.21 Deforestation in Indonesia[edit] The growing demand for palm oil by large food and cosmetics corporations and agrofuels is driving the large-scale destruction of peatlands and rainforests in Indonesia. The degradation and burning of Indonesia's peatlands causes the emission of 1.8 billion tons (Gt) of greenhouse gases annually. Palm plantations are often established after large tracts of rainforest have been destroyed in Indonesia. This destruction accelerates climate change and pushes endangered species, such as the orangutan and the Sumatran tiger, to the brink of extinction. Environmental organizations such as Greenpeace investigated in 2010 how the major food multinational Nestlé sourced palm oil from the Sinar Mas Group, which was linked to the destruction of Indonesia's rainforests and peatlands. The palm oil ended up in the production of products such as Kit Kat. Months after the report, Nestlé severed its business ties with Sinar Mas. Unilever did the same in 2009 after the purchase of Sinar Mas palm oil for the production of Dove cosmetics was exposed. In March 2010, Kraft also canceled its contracts.
