Deterring a swarming colony is one of the most difficult tasks in beekeeping. Simply removing the queen cells is often not enough to stop swarming. We've tried this method many times in the past. Even if you remove the queen cells ten times, if the factors driving the colony to swarm persist, the bees will build queen cells again for the eleventh time. In this video, we're trying a different method to prevent swarming. We cage the queens of colonies that we've identified as starting to swarm. However, there's an important detail here: the cages must allow worker bees to easily enter and exit. This practice cannot be done effectively with cages that don't allow worker bees to enter and exit. After the queen bee is caged, all the queen cells are removed, and the queen bee is kept in the cage for about 10-15 days. The goal is to wait for the strong spring air currents and the effect of fertile pasture, which drive the colony to swarm, to subside somewhat. During this process, if some of the worker bees in the hive are removed and given to other colonies as reinforcements, the colony's tendency to swarm may decrease. During the application process, the queen cells will be checked and cleaned several times: • The first queen cells will be destroyed when the queen bee is placed in the cage. • New queen cells formed approximately 10 days later will be cleaned again. • On the 15th day, during the final check, the queen bee will be released and the colony's condition will be monitored. We do not yet know the definitive results of this method. The application you see in the video is purely an experimental study. Let's see if this method can prevent the colony from swarming.
