Richard Whalley -'Assynt to Letterewe' - March 2026 performance with verbal intro

Performed on 26 March 2026 in the Cosmo Rodewald Concert Hall, Manchester by: The Quatuor Danel (Marc Danel + Gilles Millet - violins, Vlad Bogdanas - viola and Yovan Markovitch - cello) Pete Furniss - clarinet Richard Whalley - piano. Music starts 2:48 'Assynt to Letterewe' was inspired by the panorama of shapes of distant mountain peaks in the North West Highlands of Scotland, as seen from the ferry from Ullapool to Stornoway, in early September 2021. These shapes are so varied and fascinating that I couldn’t stop looking at them and photographing them as the ferry gradually retreated from the mainland and the panorama widened. I think these shapes are very expressive and musical – so they became the starting point for this chamber work. It can be performed by any instrumentation from 3-13 instruments. Every different instrumentation will bring difference qualities to the performance, and even with the same instrumentation no two performances will be the same because of the lack of co-ordination, and the freedom to make choices as the piece proceeds. Yet the musical shapes will remain the same across different performances - like being in the same place on different days at different times of year, and changing the viewpoint very slightly each time. This piece is dedicated to my friend Piers Hellawell, who lives beyond the end of that ferry route.
