How to Repair Martin Guitar Bindings- The Most Thorough way.

In this video I show the best long term method for repairing shrinking binding on Martin guitars made between 2012 and 2018 (roughly). Yes, Martin are aware of this common guitar binding failures. @westguitarworks1132 (another friend I met via The Loothgroup) posted some interesting info Martin's new "Simple Dovetail" guitars. He says that "One thing to note is that releasing from under the fretboard or near the heel cap does not work on models with the simple dovetail. They route into the sides and into the binding underneath where the neck butts up to the body and if you manage to free the binding without it snapping you’ll find that most of it has been routed off. You’ll end up having to splice in over an inch of binding instead of a sliver on the back & splice slivers in at the fretboard extension. Basically if it has the maple badge double stick taped to the neck block, releasing it the way you show in this video wont work." In my experience, the rest of the binding (usually the upper bout first but no always) will eventually pull away as the binding continues to shrink. But spot gluing (with canopy glue) just the waist is sometimes the best thing to do for on a new guitar, it will fail in time but it will give the binding more time to shrink and then do the job properly. If all depends on how much resistance you feel on the separated waist binding. Q2- "But the the hair drier method DOES work!". As a bandaid fix, yes, but as I say, I don't like the method of using a hair drier/heat to stretch the binding- I've found that while it usually allows the binding in the localized waist area to be reseated, the greater problem hasn't been dealt with- ie the entire binding shrinking. SO fix the greater problem by releasing as much of it as you can. Sometimes a guitars binding comes away due to adhesion issues (see Q5)- in that case a quick waist glue up it is all that is needed as the binding has no "shrinkage" issue- also in such a case heat isn't needed but I thought id add that info here. Q3- "Why no closeups of the finish product?!"- Cuz I forgot to film it. Q4- "Would you do the same thing on more expensive Martins?"- Yes, but i've found owners of expensive guitars also want finish touchups.- So after what I show here, I go about that process. Q5- "Are all loose bindings on Martin guitars caused by shrinking?" No, but in the 2010-2020 range probably. Bindings can come loose from adhesion issues (as show at 17:47 mins in). These are easier to repair as all the binding naturally falls off so you just glue it back on (using canopy glue & the second strip of binding- some low tack tape may be needed to protect the finish on vintage instruments). Q6- "Is this a Martin warranty issue"- Yep, for the original owner. Martin is aware of this problem. Q7- "Is it actually the glue Martin used that is causing the binding to shrink?"- maybe/probably/I don't know. However it doesn't matter, the result & method to repair it is the same.
