His apprenticeship with the master Shams Tabrizi led him to greatly deepen his knowledge. His reputation as an excellent poet is consistent with who Rumi was, but in no way summarizes all his greatness and importance, especially for Islamic culture. Besides writing some of the most beautiful verses ever seen, the Persian-born writer was also a great scholar of Islamic law (Sharia) and one of the best-known Sufi masters in history. Although he is quite popular in the West today, and one of the most widely read poets in the USA, parts of his life and work have undergone changes in English translations to make them more palatable to American audiences. As a consequence, a significant portion of the Islamic influence in his texts and their relevance to the culture of the religion have, at best, been quite diluted by Westerners. However, the beauty of Rumi's poems is not unrelated to his religion; on the contrary, his legacy helps us understand important aspects of the Islamic religion that show us how love for God can help people be better in the most important aspects of life.
