Slovakia's Bratislava may be Europe's best-kept secret

Slovakia's capital Bratislava is an under-appreciated gem in the heart of Central Europe. If you’re looking for a pleasant European city easy to explore on foot, Bratislava has you covered. This is a charming city of a half million people on the banks of the Danube River with a well-preserved Old Town and with a laid-back ambiance that sets it apart from many European capitals. If you’re not familiar with it, Slovakia is a country of 6 million people in the heart of Central Europe, sandwiched between Poland, Ukraine, Hungary, Austria and Czechia. During an earlier age the city was the de facto capital of the kingdom of Hungary, numerous monarchs of which were coronated in the city's Saint Martin's Cathedral. With its cobbled streets, cozy cafes and vibrant cultural life, Bratislava is a great place to kick back while still offering plenty to see.
