The Medieval Carmina Burana, 12th-14th century - Murmur Mori live - medieval music

Some moments from Murmur Mori's concert at the Civic Museums of Monza. VAGANTES: The Medieval Carmina Burana, 12th-14th century. In Roncaglia, in December 1158, Emperor Frederick Barbarossa issued the Autentica Habita, a document granting privileges and immunities to those students nowadays named as "Clerici Vagantes": figures bordering between jester-poets and ecclesiastics. These students and their erudite teachers left us a poetic and musical repertoire of extreme interest for European culture, preserved in the manuscript Clm. 4660, known as the Codex Buranus. This manuscript was compiled in South Tyrol between the 13th and 14th century. The poetic-musical corpus includes compositions on erotic love, sacred chants, Bacchic hymns, and satirical songs. This repertoire was widely known in Europe and is documented in other manuscript sources, which allow us to reconstruct the music of these lyrics. Murmur Mori ensemble has selected a portion of this repertoire offering the portrait of a medieval era rich in colours, biting satire and social criticism.
