Why Contemporary Art Is More Interesting Than You Think

I got on a bus, went downtown, and finally visited the Portland Art Museum — and I have a lot of thoughts. In this video I walk you through what I saw, what surprised me, and what completely stopped me in my tracks — including a section devoted to Mark Rothko, the Russian-born artist who grew up right here in Portland and went on to paint massive fields of color that are meant to swallow you whole. I also talk about why contemporary art gets a bad reputation, why context transforms everything, and the moment I stood in front of a piece that was just four black squares on a wall — until I read the artist's statement and it became one of the most profound things I've ever seen in a museum. Plus: why photographs of famous paintings are basically useless, what it's like to stand inches from a Leonardo da Vinci, and why I took the bus downtown just to feel like a tourist in my own city. In this video: Portland Art Museum — size, layout & what makes it worth visiting Mark Rothko: who he was, why he matters & what his paintings feel like in person Marcel Duchamp, the urinal, and why "that's not art" misses the point Four black squares that represent the words of dictators — and why it's profound Why seeing famous paintings in person is nothing like photos My plan for regular solo mini excursions around Portland 🎨 🚌 🖼️ Subscribe for weekly videos on creativity, slow living, and finding inspiration close to home.
